Between Marseille to the west, the Luberon hills to the north and Nice to the east “Côtes de Provençe” wines are grown. The first vines on French soil were planted here by Greek colonists. The Romans continued this tradition. Julius Cesar loved these wines.
Today roughly 600 million liters are produced. Mainly Rosé, some Rot- and a small quantity of White. Due to many hours of sunshine the wines are often robust with high alcohol content.
Typical grape varieties are Grenache, Cinsault, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Tibouren, Clairette, Ugni blanc and Rolle, in Bellet mainly Folle and Braquet.
